STATEN ISLAND, NY — On October 7, Curtis High School football players were approached by police, resulting in a physical altercation and the students being taken into custody, one of whom was seriously injured. In response, the NAACP New York State Conference and its Staten Island Branch issued the following statement:
“The NAACP New York State Conference is closely following this incident. On Wednesday, October 14, the NAACP Staten Island Branch hosted a town hall with residents, parents, students, and community partners. It gave the community a place to share concerns, get accurate information, and learn their rights during police encounters. The community was clear: they want answers, and they want accountability.
“We take every allegation of excessive force seriously and when a young person is seriously injured during a police encounter, the community deserves a full and transparent report of what happened.
“We acknowledge the 120th Precinct’s willingness to engage with community leaders and its stated commitment to transparency. We also note that an investigation is under way. In keeping with that commitment, the NAACP and the Staten Island community are calling for:
The release of all body-worn camera footage of the incident.
A full and public explanation of the events that led to the confrontation, including details of the shots-fired report and the description officers relied on.
A full investigation by the Civilian Complaint Review Board and the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau.
Modified duty for the officers involved while the investigation is pending.
The dismissal of the charges against the young people.
“The NAACP New York State Conference and the Staten Island Branch will continue to support these families, monitor the investigation, and work alongside residents and partners in this community’s pursuit of justice and accountability.”
