NAACP NEW YORK STATE CONFERENCE APPLAUDS GOVERNOR'S PAUSE ON NEW DATA CENTER PERMITS PENDING ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
The NAACP New York State Conference applauds the Governor's decision to pause the permitting of new data centers while the State conducts an environmental review of their impact on our communities. Across New York, NAACP branches have been on the front lines, organizing to ensure that data centers proposed in their neighborhoods are developed thoughtfully, transparently, and with genuine community input.
“These facilities consume enormous amounts of energy and water, strain aquifers, and public infrastructure, and too often concentrate their air, noise, and water in communities already disproportionally impacted by environmental burdens. The State's review must account for these harms, and the standards that emerge from this process will be crucial to the health of our communities. We must reject the false choice between technological advancement and public health.
“The NAACP New York State Conference will continue to stand up and demand that future regulations cover all large data centers and hold developers and operators accountable for supporting the State's renewable energy goals."
