The NAACP New York State Conference on a Senate deal to fund the government without lowering health care costs:

For weeks, Senate Democrats have vowed not to support a continuing budget resolution that did not address the impending healthcare crisis millions of Americans are facing right now. A bill that fails to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits is not a win for New Yorkers. Now is not the time for our elected leaders to waver in their resolve, based on a promise that we know will not come to fruition.

New Yorkers are making incredible sacrifices; we have lived with uncertainty and a government that has failed to meet our needs, but we have not given up hope. We know that our neighbors, friends, and colleagues are suffering as a result of government funding cuts, the cancellation of critical projects, targeted firings of government workers, and the overall government shutdown, which has cast a shadow on the households of close to 3 million New Yorkers who rely on SNAP benefits to feed their families. Certainly, the decision to continue to hold out is a difficult one, but that is all the more reason our elected leaders must stand taller. It is everyday Americans who are making the ultimate sacrifice, and we deserve better than this funding bill. We demand that our Senate and House leaders not cave but to continue to fight for what is right.
