Statement: NAACP New York State Conference Calls on Governor Hochul to consider Andre Brown’s Clemency Application

NAACP New York State Conference Calls on Governor Hochul to consider Andre Brown’s Clemency ApplicationAndre Brown has spent 23 of the last 25 years incarcerated in New York State prisons. Friday, Mr. Brown is scheduled to turn himself in to serve an additional 17 years. This comes after he has spent the last 2 years as a free man due to the overturning of his initial conviction. The Courts have now reversed that decision. The NAACP New York State Conference is calling on Governor Hochul to consider Mr. Brown’s clemency application and prevent his reincarceration. The State Conference advocates for fairness in New York’s criminal justice system and remains committed to efforts to decarcerate the State’s correctional system- an institution that consumes black bodies.Mr. Brown - who maintains his innocence - has clearly demonstrated his ability to have a positive impact on his community as a paralegal, a youth counselor, a father and a husband. He is not a public safety risk and is in no need of rehabilitation. Simply put, there is no public interest served by his reincarceration.Only Governor Hochul has the power to right this wrong.
